Three Gifts – Part 2

King. High Priest. Saviour. Three words that give life and meaning to the three gifts presented by wise men from the East in Matthew 2. Gold, frankincense, and myrrh presented to the king, high priest, and savior of the world. Why is it so important for us to understand why the gift of frankincense? God had sent the great High Priest we see in Hebrews 7:26-8:5.

In the Jewish faith, the high priest offered incense and sacrifice for himself and all of God’s people. He interceded on their behalf to bring the people in right-standing with God each year. The significance of Jesus and what God sent Him to accomplish? Intercede once and for all to give us the opportunity for right-standing with God.

Our High Priest, Jesus Christ, is sinless, the only one worthy to offer Himself as sacrifice…once and for all, appointed by divine oath, whose ministry is eternal. This is unlike any high priest appointed before Him that Hebrews 7:26-28 tells us were weak and sinful like the rest of us. Our great High Priest is strong, holy, and indestructible. God set up the system of priests and sacrifices, and He perfected it with Jesus. The priests were the shadows in Hebrews 8:5. Jesus is the real thing…God in flesh!
